Thinking I’ll name this one “burgundy in bloom” in honor of our most vibrant fall colors here in Texas - the prickly pear in fruit.

Every September the cactus are covered in this juicy fruit that feeds local wildlife and the brave souls who chose to harvest it for its delicious juice - looking at you @brushfirefarms (check them out for local prickly pear syrups and jams)

My goal with this piece is to have the foreground cactus really pop. They are huge and that has given me the opportunity to really get into the spikes, the shadows on the spikes, the tiny spikes on the spikes. Up close and personal and I love it. Here I am timelapse painting said spikes at 10x speed.

The baby nap time hustle is on with this piece.

It’s wild to see what pressure can do and this commission is top priority right now. With my first born I really struggled with utilizing nap time properly and would be so tired myself and now with my second - and a lot of planning and routine - I find I’m surprising myself! Finding time to paint as fast as I can in a two hour window doesn’t leave much time for sharing and all the social media blah blah so here’s some proof of life. ✌️

No name yet for my armadillo cactus portal painting. This painting represents the early days in my new studio. This cactus has grown a lot since I referenced it. In the night sky we have Orion that has always been a guiding constellation for me. The light from the city and development is looming but the cactus and the armadillo still feel wild in their space, much like myself.

This large scale prickly pear lives in the home of a wonderful collector now. One of my favorite commissions to date purely because of the trust I was given. Reminds me of the golden evening light in summer over fields of tall grass, buzzing of bees, and birds readying for bed. And of course I just loved creating the cactus “bark” showing how much these hardy succulents can live through, their age and wisdom.
