This large scale prickly pear lives in the home of a wonderful collector now. One of my favorite commissions to date purely because of the trust I was given. Reminds me of the golden evening light in summer over fields of tall grass, buzzing of bees, and birds readying for bed. And of course I just loved creating the cactus “bark” showing how much these hardy succulents can live through, their age and wisdom.

I have been staring at this piece for so long. I’ll work on it and then hang it again for a month before I choose my next move. Unlike my other work I am playing heavily into the layering process with this and I really want each layer to shine through so you have moments to enjoy heavy detail and moments where the underpainting and even the original sketch come through. Because of this my colors have been crucial. I really get one chance to mix them right. But this light peachy nude was exactly what I intended for the negative space here and I’m just sooooo excited to keep sharing my progress on this.

Growing up we always had to watch for snakes when we were playing outside. Here seen is a cottonmouth which we would find around my house. We also had coral snakes, water moccasins, and plenty of rat snakes. I honestly can’t hike around or climb over piles of wood without always being concerned (which was a good lesson I learned as a kid). My parents always encouraged I take a giant stick so at the very least I could use it in self defense but I think the real reason was to make sure I stayed diligent when I was exploring around outside. Whatever they did, it worked! Mad respect for these awesome, and very beautiful creatures in our backyard.

Texas hill country wildlife in ceramic forms! Such a great way to celebrate the native creatures that I see scampering around my home. Also shoutout to @chelseapotteryco for recommending the aftosa wax resist! The experimental last piece turned out okkkk but the first piece with the green underglaze was with aftosa and I looooved working with it a lot more as well as the results 🤌🏻
